Flavours of NZ – the home of The Decadent Fudge Co
Mick and Sue O’Callaghan brought their fudge company to Hanmer when they relocated from Nelson in late 2013.
When Mick started the business, he was selling fudge at the weekly Nelson Market and Sue was busy with her fashion accessory import business.
However late in 2013, the O’Callaghan’s joined entrepreneurial forces and opened ‘Flavours of NZ’ on Conical Hill Rd, Hanmer Springs, initially stocking their fudge, hand crafted chocolates, old fashioned confectionery and NZ gourmet food lines.
“As time went on, I couldn’t help myself, and introduced a small fashion section into the shop – and the rest is history. The fashion/gifts have almost taken over” says Sue.
At the beginning of 2014, they extended the shop, knocking out some internal walls and opening up the shop to what it is now.
“Our fudge is still as popular as ever but we are now becoming known for our range of affordable handbags, scarves and giftware.”
And, the fudge is simply delicious. The O’Callaghan’s have developed their own fudge recipe which isn’t as sweet as most fudge available in NZ. They handcraft each flavour in small batches so that it is as fresh as it can be. “We don’t mass produce. Most other fudges sold in NZ are made from an imported powdered mix. People can taste the difference straight away after tasting ours.”
People from all over the world arrive in Hanmer with two things on their agenda – visit the hot pools and sample and take home some Decadent Fudge.
An exciting new development is their new range of sugar, dairy, soy and gluten free fudges. These are proving very popular especially with those wanting to be ‘sugar free’.
They ship anywhere in NZ and can cater for individual pieces through to large family gift boxes. Call in next time you visit Hanmer Springs – 1/30 Conical Hill Rd on the corner opposite the Mini Golf.
