The Groynes

Rustic park featuring walking trails, off-leash dog areas, picnic spots, fishing & a playground.

Construction work to improve access to the Groynes will begin on 11 September 2017 and run for four-to-five weeks.

Until 13 October 2017 vehicle access will be limited to the South Bank Picnic and Playground Area, download a map [PDF, 682 KB] to see closures. The rest of the Groynes can still be accessed via multiple footbridges.

Please note there are alternative pedestrian entrances at Clearwater Resort and Darroch Street Reserve, the latter offering a 40-minute walk that leads directly to the dog park.

Picnics and play

Picnic areas and free barbeques are dotted throughout the park. View the map [PDF, 659 KB] for bookable picnic areas or bbqs. Please remember to take your rubbish home with you.

There are multiple playgrounds throughout the Groynes including a flying fox, see-saw, slides and swings.

Orienteering

There are two permanent courses; white (1.9 km) yellow (2.6 km).

Purchase a map for $4 from the Rosebank Cafe (near the entrance to the Groynes Park) or download from the local orienteering club(external link).

Fishing

The small lakes and waterways provide great trout fishing opportunities for children. Anglers can fish in the fishing and recreation lakes all year. The streams in the park are closed to fishing during spawning (April to October).  All anglers need to have a fishing licence available online from Fish and Game New Zealand(external link). Licenses for children under 12 years old are free.

Gates and opening hours

Gates open from 7am–7pm.  During daylight saving months, gates are open from 7am–9pm. Gate closures are administered by ADT security. A callout fee will be charged to release vehicles.

Dogs

There is a large off-leash exercise park for dogs. Dogs can be walked on the Otukaikino Track on lead, only for the purposes of accessing the Dog Park. Dogs are not permitted anywhere else in The Groynes park.

Walks

There are two main walking tracks; the Otukaikino Track, and the Waimairi Walkway which is currently closed during construction of the SH bypass. Or you can just wander around the lakes and rivers at your leisure.
