Shamarra Alpaca farm, located on the western side of Akaroa Harbour, and only 20 minutes from Akaroa, is home to a herd of over 100 alpacas. The farm offers breathtaking panoramic views from the Akaroa Heads to the south, and all the way to Barry’s Bay at the north end of the harbour.
Frank and Anya have farmed alpacas since 2004, after moving to New Zealand from the Caribbean. They are passionate about their alpacas and look forward to sharing their considerable knowledge with you.
Driving up to the big red barn you’ll enjoy stunning sights of the harbour. Upon arrival, you’ll be treated to an informative and interactive introduction to alpacas.
Our friendly alpacas will be in pens for you to get up close to and appreciate their unique characteristics and their ultra fine fleece. A few alpacas will be on halters and you will have an opportunity to lead an alpaca. After a hands on fibre presentation, you can take a wander around the paddocks and get to enjoy these majestic creatures grazing contentedly in their natural environment. Each alpaca has a name, and Anya remembers them all!
Enjoy a beverage and home baked biscuits while browsing the Alpaca Shop. A selection of luxurious alpaca garments and accessories made from fibre from our alpacas and exclusive to Shamarra are for sale. Visa, Mastercard & UnionPay accepted.
